Kia ora koutou,
It’s been a busy and productive time for us since our last newsletter, with three key events in the past four months: our AGM, our yearly strategy day, and Peering Asia.
First up, our AGM, which is legislatively our most important date of the year, taking a lot of effort to put on, from both paid staff and volunteers. It’s also a great opportunity for Members and stakeholders to come together. This year, we held elections, welcoming two new Committee Members: Callum Barr (elected for a two-year term) and Shaun Fisher (four-year term). Congratulations to both, as they take their places as invaluable members of our team. In addition, we successfully adopted changes required under New Zealand’s new Societies Act, ensuring our organisation’s long-term compliance and stability. You can learn more about this in the AGM report.
Next on our schedule was our annual Strategy Day in October. This is our key opportunity for the Committee and supporting staff to meet face-to-face, reflect on our progress, and to really deal with the important issues to the IX. It was especially valuable for our new Committee Members, who brought fresh perspectives to our discussions. Together, we tackled current challenges, explored emerging technologies, and refined our strategic goals. The outcomes from this session will guide our work for the coming years.
Thirdly, in early November, I was fortunate enough to attend Peering Asia in Jakarta in early November. As most of you won’t be familiar, Peering Asia brings together the key Internet Exchanges, content providers, and service providers from across the region to discuss existing, and potential relationships. Over two days, I participated in engaging discussions and productive meetings with key players in the internet space, meeting both existing and potential NZIX Members.
Finally, we’re thrilled to welcome several new international Members to NZIX! Among them are organisations like zScaler and AT&T. It’s worth noting that some of these Members, along with others like Microsoft and AWS, don’t yet peer on our route servers. This presents opportunities for greater connectivity in the future—exciting times ahead.
As always, thank you to everyone—Committee members, staff, and our wider community—for your continued support and dedication to NZIX. Your efforts make all the difference.
Ngā mihi
Dave,
Chair
