Hi All,

Welcome to another NZIX newsletter.

It’s been a busy few months across our industry. Just last month, many of our members attended NZNOG, the main annual industry event. NZIX had a strong presence there and you can read all about it in this newsletter item.

Our internet exchanges continue to grow. AKL-IX recently hit a peak of 766 Gbps thanks, once again, to Fortnite! We have exciting plans underway for CHC-IX in response to member demand.  Read all about it here.

Last year, we held our first social event outside Auckland, in Christchurch. Around a dozen members and friends came along. Building on that, we held our first Wellington social this February. It was a great success, with more than 20 members attending and plenty of good conversation. Shaun has written a short recap, so be sure to check it out.

And speaking of events, now’s a good time to mention our upcoming milestone, the 10th anniversary of AKL-IX and NZIX as an organisation! We’ll be celebrating in style, so please save the date: Thursday 25 February 2026. We hope you’ll join us for the celebrations in central Auckland.

Cheers,

Dave,
Chair

NZIX was yet again a proud Gold Sponsor of the annual NZNOG conference. This year we headed to picturesque city of Napier on the east coast. The Napier War Memorial was a beautiful venue for the event, with stunning coastline views from the main conference room and breakout areas. Thankfully, the weather cooperated this year, which was pleasant change from last time.

In addition to representing at the conference, NZIX was also excited to support the inaugural IAASysters NZ program as a bronze sponsor. The program is an initiative of the Internet Association of Australia (IAA) and backed by NZNOG to support women in the internet industry. It offers a one-day workshop that provides expert career advice and helps build the soft skills essential for career advancement. IAA have hosted a similar program in Australia for the past four years, and we hope to see the program continue and grow in Aotearoa for years to come. The workshop preceded the conference, which the Systers then attended.

They also joined in the welcome drinks at K Kitchen and Bar on the Wednesday evening.  This event marked the official start of NZNOG, where the conversations were lively and the atmosphere welcoming.

On Thursday morning, the conference began at 9am sharp, with IAA’s Sabrina Chang-Rozario recapping the IAASysters NZ program. She was joined by two brave participants who shared their reflections on the day, offering great insight into the impact of the initiative

As always, Team NZIX had our signature purple stand set up and ready to meet conference goers. This year we were giving away large NZIX thermos water bottles, socks and lollies, and they were all a hit! We enjoyed the opportunity to talk with our members, suppliers and all other conference attendees throughout the event.

Day one saw a full lineup of thought-provoking presentations, including an IX update from our very own Matthew Kobayashi to close out the day. Edge IX and Megaport also gave IX updates. The day wrapped up right on time and it was on to the evening’s entertainment. Activity options included the choice of an outdoor escape room or a relaxed tour of the National Aquarium, and beach clean-up session. Many were surprised by just how much rubbish the NOG crew managed to collect!  Dinner was served back at the venue and the cocktail-style setup, made it perfect for more socialising and networking.

Day two kicked off with an APNIC update and wrapped up early in the afternoon, following a series of lightning talks. Many stayed on to enjoy the post-NOG cocktail or gin master classes, whilst others used the early mark to get a jump on travelling home.

NZNOG 2025 was a huge success, and if the NOG will have us, we’ll see you all back in 2026!

We’re excited to confirm that the long-awaited upgrade to the Christchurch Internet Exchange (CHC-IX) is officially underway!

New hardware has been staged at both datacentre sites, setting the stage for a significant leap forward — boosting maximum port capacity from 40Gbps to a lightning-fast 100Gbps. This upgrade not only modernises the exchange infrastructure but also future-proofs CHC-IX to support the continued growth and demands of the South Island’s internet ecosystem.

At this point, we’re just waiting on the final delivery of new, diverse dark fibre paths. Once in place, we’ll begin working through our carefully planned migration strategy to transition members to the upgraded hardware.

Stay tuned for the official upgrade announcement and maintenance window — exciting times ahead for CHC-IX!

Back in February the NZIX community gathered at the Foxglove in Wellington for one of our most well-attended social events to date. The evening saw a fantastic turnout and it was great to see such a strong mix of members, industry peers, and new faces from across the internet community.

There was no shortage of great chats, shared ideas, and helpful feedback, which will all to help shape the future of NZIX. It was particularly encouraging to see fresh faces alongside long-time supporters, and we hope this reflects an expanding reach and relevance of the IX in connecting communities across the country.

Thanks to everyone who came along and helped make the night such a success. We’re already looking forward to the next one.

See you there!
